The Know Project

The Know Project has established itself within the secondary schools of West Cumbria over the past three years and has developed a strong reputation for delivering an up to date, honest and thought provoking drug and alcohol education and awareness programme.

The Know Project is a unique and powerful way of bringing into focus the dangers of drug/alcohol misuse by introducing young people to individuals who have experienced the issues first hand.

The speakers that make up The Know give their own unique stories on how drug/alcohol misuse has affected their lives in the past and their present day working environment.

They have lived with the issues that are related to drug/alcohol misuse, whether personal or through a family members misuse, their experience gives them the knowledge to empower and educate young people.

This gives the young people the opportunity to make positive and informed decisions regarding drug/alcohol misuse.

The Know Project covers a whole range of issues surrounding the misuse of drugs/alcohol;

  • Experimental
  • Recreational
  • Chaotic
  • Dependeance
  • Risky Behaviour issues

The project also has a range of teaching ‘tools’.

o Six interactive drug boxes – these allow young people to complete quizzes and interact with characters on the drug box – learning as they do so.

The boxes collect data that The Know Project staff can analyse and therefore tailor the talks specifically for the areas the drug boxes have been used in.

o Beer goggles – an excellent teaching aid that gives the wearer the ‘feeling’ of being under the influence of alcohol

o A drug box – this contains examples of over 30 different drugs, giving the opportunity for individuals to visually identify the drugs being spoken of.

The Know Project mainly works within the secondary schools of West Cumbria but due to demand has also attended schools in the north and south of the area on a regular basis.

As well as secondary schools the project also works with;

o Primary schools

o Colleges

o Youth groups

Alternative education centres

Recently the project presented within Sellafield to workers to discuss the issues surrounding drug/alcohol policies and also the dangers of work accidents relating to substance misuse.
