Through the dedication of staff and volunteers the helpline, the only means of 24 hour support when dealing with drug/alcohol issues across Cumbria, gives misusers, family, friends, agencies and schools the opportunity for round the clock support and advice. Signpost also supports PADA, a national helpline that supports parent/carers. PADA’s helpline is transferred to Signpost out of office hours and at weekends. We, as a society, need to realise that the treatment and support of drugs/alcohol users has moved on. The majority of the staff/volunteers that work and support the Rising Sun Trust have experienced a life involving drugs/alcohol issues; be it a personal experience or through supporting a family member or friend with their drugs/alcohol issues. This gives them the insight and understanding when it comes to supporting individuals People accessing these services need to be treated as individuals not a number. For certain individuals a structured approach to treatment in the first few weeks of addressing a drugs/alcohol issue does not work, if an individual who leads a chaotic lifestyle has to wait three weeks for an appointment for housing/drug alcohol treatment/assessment or any other appointment relevant to their recovery, we as a service have failed them, there will always be ‘excuses for a person to relapse, the agencies that work for that person should not be one of those excuses. |
